The Gold Coast is pretty good at keeping you busy. Between the beaches, theme parks, nightlife and all those gorgeous hinterland spots, you could easily spend weeks here without running out of things to do.
But if you’ve had enough of the beach for a day (yes, apparently that’s possible), there are some seriously good day trips from the Gold Coast.
You can escape into rainforest-covered mountains, explore waterfalls and glow-worm caves, visit wineries, wander through historic towns, spend the day on an island, or even cross the border into northern New South Wales.
And the best part? You don’t always need a car.
I live on the Gold Coast and don’t have a car, so I’ve learned pretty quickly which day trips are easy enough to do independently and which ones are much less hassle if you book a tour and let someone else worry about the driving.
So, whether you’re looking for a quick beach escape, a rainforest adventure or a full day of island activities, I’ve rounded up the best day trips from the Gold Coast and included my honest advice on how to get there — including which ones I’d actually recommend doing without a car.

Where to Stay on the Gold Coast
Now, onto where you’re going to crash whilst you’re here on the Goldie.
If you’re booking tours on the Gold Coast, where you stay here can make a difference. Most tours pick up from popular areas like Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, while staying further south can be better if you’re planning to explore the beaches around Coolangatta and the southern Gold Coast.
Here are three options for different budgets:
Budget: Tequila Sunrise Hostel
If you’re travelling on a budget, Tequila Sunrise Hostel Surfers Paradise is a popular backpacker option in the heart of Surfers Paradise. It’s within easy reach of the beach, restaurants, nightlife and public transport, making it a convenient base if you’re planning to pack lots of Gold Coast tours into your trip.
👉 Check Tequila Sunrise availability on Hostelworld
Mid-Range: Dorsett Gold Coast
For a comfortable mid-range stay, Dorsett Gold Coast is in Broadbeach and is a great option if you want to be close to the beach, restaurants and entertainment. Broadbeach is also a handy base for exploring both Surfers Paradise and the southern Gold Coast.
👉 Check Dorsett prices and availability
Luxury: Peppers Soul Surfers Paradise
If you’re looking to splash out, Peppers Soul Surfers Paradise puts you right on the Surfers Paradise beachfront, with ocean views and plenty of restaurants and attractions nearby. It’s a great choice if you want your accommodation to be part of the Gold Coast experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

I’ve also put together a more detailed guide to the best places to stay in the area, including options for different budgets and the best Gold Coast neighbourhoods to stay in based on which activities you’re doing.

1. Tamborine Mountain

Why Visit
Tamborine Mountain is one of the easiest and most popular day trips from the Gold Coast, and it’s a great choice if you want a mix of rainforest, waterfalls, food and wine without travelling too far.
Spend the day exploring the rainforest, stopping at local wineries and cafés, and wandering along Gallery Walk. It’s also one of the best options if you want a Gold Coast hinterland day trip that doesn’t involve a full day of hiking.
Things to do on Tamborine Mountain
- Walk the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk
- Visit Curtis Falls
- Visit local wineries, breweries and distilleries
- Browse the shops and galleries along Gallery Walk
- Stop for lunch, coffee or something sweet at one of the mountain’s cafés
Getting there
Best with a car. 🚗 Tamborine Mountain is roughly 45 minutes from the Gold Coast, but you’ll need your own transport to easily get between the different attractions.
No car?
You can piece together public transport with a taxi too, but honestly, I wouldn’t bother. I live on the Gold Coast without a car, and this is one of those day trips where I’d book a guided tour instead. You’ll see more and don’t have to worry about getting between the rainforest, wineries and other attractions.
Best tour option
Most tours include hotel pickup and run for around 6-8 hours. Look for tours that combine wineries and rainforest walks.
Pineapple Tours AU includes Rainforest Skywalk entry and unlimited hop-on hop-off access to wineries and breweries on Tamborine Mountain.

2. Springbrook National Park

Springbrook National Park is one of the best day trips from the Gold Coast.
Why Visit
If you’re looking for rainforest, waterfalls and spectacular views, Springbrook National Park is one of the best day trips from the Gold Coast. The drive takes you into the Gold Coast Hinterland, where you’ll find walking trails, ancient rainforest and some seriously impressive lookouts.
It’s a great choice for a more active day out, although you don’t need to be a serious hiker to enjoy it.
Things to do in Springbrook National Park
- See Purling Brook Falls
- Visit Best of All Lookout (yes, it is actually named this)
- Walk one of the rainforest trails
- Stop at the park’s scenic lookouts
- Keep an eye out for native birds and wildlife
Getting there
Best with a car. 🚗 Springbrook is around 45 minutes from the Gold Coast, but the mountain roads are winding and attractions are spread throughout the park.
No car?
This is one I’d book a guided tour for. Public transport won’t get you directly to Springbrook, or conveniently between the main sights, and you’ll get much more out of your day if someone else handles the driving.
Best tour option
Full-day tours generally include transport from Surfers Paradise, plus a guided tour of all the waterfalls and lookouts in Springbrook. Look for tours that include pickup from where you are staying.
Queensland Day Tours include time in Springbrook, Tamborine and a tour of the glowworm caves at Cedar Creek in their tour.

3. Natural Bridge and Glow-worm Caves

Glow-worm Caves at Natural Bridge in Springbrook. Photo by Nicole Geri on Unsplash
Why Visit
Natural Bridge is technically part of Springbrook National Park, but I think it deserves its own entry. The Natural Bridge rock formation, waterfall and glow-worm caves make this one of the most distinctive Gold Coast hinterland trips.
The walk itself is relatively short, so it’s a good option if you want to experience the rainforest without committing to a full day of hiking.
For a completely different side of the Gold Coast, head into the rainforest after dark to see thousands of glow worms lighting up ancient caves. It’s one of the region’s most unique nature experiences and a fantastic evening tour.
Things to do at Natural Bridge
- Walk the Natural Bridge Circuit
- See the waterfall inside the natural rock arch
- Look for glow worms on an evening tour
- Explore rainforest at night
Getting there
🚗 Best with a car. It’s roughly 45–60 minutes from the Gold Coast, depending on where you’re staying.
No car?
I’d book a guided Natural Bridge tour, particularly if you’re interested in seeing the glow worms. This isn’t somewhere I’d recommend trying to reach by piecing together public transport.
Best tour option
A guided glow worm cave tour at Natural Bridge is one of the most popular night tours from the Gold Coast.
In their guided tour, Bos Tours Queensland include the Natural Bridge tour, time at Gallery Walk in Mt Tamborine, Rainforest SkyWalk entry AND Glow Worm Caves entry.

4. Lamington National Park & O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat

Why Visit
For a proper rainforest escape, head to Lamington National Park and O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Lamington National Park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests, and you’ll be surrounded by ancient rainforest, waterfalls, walking trails and mountain scenery, with plenty to keep you occupied for a full day.
O’Reilly’s is also a good option if you’re not interested in spending the entire day hiking. Lamington and O’Reilly’s Rainforest are one of the best Gold Coast day trips for nature lovers and hikers.
Things to do at Lamington & O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat
- Walk through Lamington National Park
- Try the O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk
- Look for native birds and wildlife
- Explore one of the many rainforest trails
- Stop for lunch or a drink at O’Reilly’s
Getting there
Best with a car. 🚗 Allow around an hour or more from the Gold Coast, and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the area rather than rushing there and back.
No car?
Book a tour. This is another one where I’d personally choose a guided trip rather than trying to work out the public transport.
Best tour option
Look for tours that combine Lamington National Park with O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat and the famous Tree Top Walk.
👉 Browse Lamington National Park & O’Reilly’s tours from the Gold Coast
5. Canungra Valley & Wine Country
Why Visit
Not every day trip needs to involve hiking boots. If you’d rather spend your day drinking wine, eating good food and enjoying the countryside, head to Canungra Valley.
Canungra is also the gateway to Lamington National Park, so it’s easy to combine the area with a hinterland adventure — although I’d recommend keeping this day focused on the slower side of the Scenic Rim.
Things to do in Canungra Valley
- Visit local wineries and cellar doors
- Enjoy a wine tasting
- Stop for a long lunch
- Try an alpaca picnic
- Explore the countryside around Canungra Creek
Getting there
Best with a car. 🚗 Canungra is around 45–60 minutes from the Gold Coast, depending on your starting point.
No car?
This is a great one to do as a guided wine tour. And honestly, if you’re planning on drinking wine, having someone else drive you around is a pretty good idea anyway!
Best tour option
Most full-day tours include hotel pickup, guided walks, and visits to O’Reilly’s and scenic lookouts throughout the park.
Southern Cross Tour Co on GetYourGuide combines Lamington National Park with O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat AND a Canungra Vineyard Tour.

6. Murwillumbah
Why Visit
If you want to do something a little different, Murwillumbah makes a great day trip from the Gold Coast into northern New South Wales.
It’s less about ticking off major tourist attractions and more about wandering around a characterful regional town, eating good food and exploring the surrounding scenery.
Things to do in Murwillumbah
- Admire the town’s Art Deco architecture
- Explore the Murwillumbah Arts Precinct
- Check out local cafés and shops
- Ride or walk part of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail
- Enjoy views towards Wollumbin
Getting there
Best with a car. 🚗 Murwillumbah is roughly 45–60 minutes from the Gold Coast, making it one of the more manageable NSW day trips.
No car?
You can get to Murwillumbah without driving, but you’ll have less flexibility once you’re there. If you want to explore beyond the town centre, I’d recommend having a car or looking into an organised tour.

7. Byron Bay

Byron Bay
Why Visit
Of course, we can’t talk about day trips from the Gold Coast without mentioning Byron Bay.
It’s a little further away than some of the other options, but it’s an easy way to spend a day exploring one of northern NSW’s most famous coastal towns.
Things to do in Byron Bay
- Relax on Byron Bay’s beaches
- Walk up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse
- Do the lighthouse walking track
- Go snorkelling
- Explore the excellent restaurant and café scene
- Browse the shops around town
Getting there
🚗 Easier by car, although parking in Byron Bay can be a headache, particularly on busy weekends and holidays.
No car?
Good news — you don’t necessarily need one. Byron Bay is one of the easier destinations on this list to visit without driving, and there are also organised tours from the Gold Coast if you’d rather leave the logistics to someone else.
👉 Browse Byron Bay tours from the Gold Coast
8. South Stradbroke Island
Why Visit
For an island escape without leaving the Gold Coast region, spend the day on South Stradbroke Island.
It’s a great choice if you want to swap the busy Gold Coast beaches for something that feels a little more wild, with beaches, bushland and plenty of opportunities to get out on the water.
Things to do on South Stradbroke Island
- Relax on the beaches
- Go kayaking or paddleboarding
- Swim and enjoy the water
- Look out for local wildlife
- Explore the island’s natural scenery
Getting there
This one is different from most of the day trips on this list because you can’t simply drive there. You’ll need to arrange a boat transfer or join an organised experience.
No car?
No car is actually fine. The bigger issue is arranging your boat transport and getting to the departure point. An organised tour or island experience can make the whole thing considerably easier.
9. Moreton Island
Yes, Moreton Island is a long day trip from the Gold Coast, but I’m including it because it’s such a popular Queensland experience — and if you want a full day of adventure, it’s hard to beat.
This is one I’d consider a “worth the early start” rather than an easy day trip.
Things to do on Moreton Island
- Snorkel around the Tangalooma Wrecks
- Try sandboarding
- See dolphins
- Enjoy the beaches
- Take a 4WD tour around the island
🚗 Getting there
I’d book a tour. You’ll need to travel north to Brisbane and then take a ferry across to Moreton Island, so doing everything independently makes for a very long day.
🚌 No car?
This is definitely a guided-tour candidate. A tour takes care of the transport, ferry, and activities, leaving you free to actually enjoy the island.
👉 Browse Moreton Island tours from the Gold Coast
10. Brisbane
If you’ve never explored Brisbane properly, it’s actually one of the easiest day trips from the Gold Coast.
Unlike most of the hinterland destinations on this list, you don’t need a car at all. Hop on the train and spend the day exploring the city, then head back to the Gold Coast in the evening.
Things to do in Brisbane
- Explore South Bank
- Walk along the Brisbane River
- Visit the museums and galleries
- Wander through the City Botanic Gardens
- Shop around Queen Street Mall
- Check out Brisbane’s food scene
🚗 Getting there
You can drive, but public transport is easier. The train from the Gold Coast is a particularly convenient option.
No car?
Absolutely doable. In fact, this is one of the day trips on this list where I’d choose public transport over driving.
11. Kingscliff
Want to cross the NSW border without driving all the way to Byron Bay? Kingscliff is a much easier beach day trip from the Gold Coast.
It’s laid-back, beautiful and particularly good for families, thanks to the calm waters of Cudgen Creek.
Things to do in Kingscliff
- Spend the day at Kingscliff Beach
- Swim at Cudgen Creek
- Walk along the beachfront
- Grab lunch at a local café or restaurant
- Enjoy a slower-paced beach day
🚗 Getting there
Easy by car and only around 40 minutes from much of the Gold Coast.
No car?
Public transport is possible, although I’d check the connections before you go. If you’re staying on the southern end of the Gold Coast, Kingscliff can be a particularly convenient NSW day trip.
12. Currumbin Valley
Why Visit
You don’t have to travel far from the Gold Coast to find rainforest and swimming holes. Currumbin Valley is one of the easiest escapes for a nature-filled day close to home.
It’s particularly good for families or anyone who wants a relaxed day of swimming, picnicking and exploring rather than a huge sightseeing itinerary.
Things to do in Currumbin Valley
- Visit Cougal Cascades
- Swim at Currumbin Rock Pools
- Explore the rainforest
- Pack a picnic
- Enjoy the walking tracks and natural scenery
Getting there
Best with a car. 🚗Currumbin Valley is close to the Gold Coast, but having a car makes it much easier to get around.
No car?
Honestly, I’d skip this one without a car. Public transport won’t give you the flexibility you need to make the most of the valley, and this is one of those occasions where I’d save it for when you have access to a vehicle.
Best Day Tours from the Gold Coast If You Don’t Have a Car
I live on the Gold Coast, and I don’t have a car, so I know firsthand that you absolutely can explore the area without one. But I’ll also be honest: some of these day trips are much easier when you let someone else do the driving.
For destinations like Brisbane, Byron Bay and Kingscliff, you can get around without a car reasonably easily. But when you’re heading into the Gold Coast Hinterland, where attractions are spread out and public transport is limited, a guided tour can save you a lot of time and hassle.
Day trips you can do without a car
Brisbane is probably the easiest. The train makes getting there straightforward, and once you’re in the city, most of the main attractions are easy to reach on foot or by public transport.
Byron Bay is another good option, particularly if you book a direct transfer or organised day tour. Once you’re in town, you can walk to the beach, restaurants and the lighthouse area.
Kingscliff is also worth considering for an easy beach day, while South Stradbroke Island doesn’t require a car once you’ve arranged your boat transport.
🚐 Day trips where I’d book a tour
This is where I’d personally spend the money.
For Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook, Natural Bridge and Lamington National Park, public transport doesn’t make much sense if you want to see several attractions in one day. There are currently tours departing from the Gold Coast covering these destinations, including Springbrook and Natural Bridge, Tamborine Mountain and O’Reilly’s/Lamington.
I’d also put Canungra Valley wine tours in this category. If you’re planning on visiting wineries, having somebody else drive is a pretty obvious win.
And for Moreton Island, I’d definitely book an organised tour. It’s already a long day from the Gold Coast, so having the transport and activities organised makes much more sense than trying to piece everything together yourself.
⭐ My pick if you don’t have a car
If I had to choose just a few, I’d go for:
- Best easy day trip: Brisbane
- Best beach day: Byron Bay
- Best rainforest trip: Springbrook & Natural Bridge
- Best food and wine day: Tamborine Mountain or Canungra Valley
- Best full-day adventure: Moreton Island
- Best wildlife/rainforest experience: Lamington National Park & O’Reilly’s
The good news is that not having a car doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the Gold Coast’s best day trips. You just need to choose your transport wisely — and sometimes, that means booking the tour.

Where to Stay on the Gold Coast Before Your Day Trip
If you’re using the Gold Coast as a base for exploring the surrounding area, where you stay can make a difference — especially if you don’t have a car.
Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are particularly convenient if you want easy access to restaurants, beaches and public transport, while Burleigh Heads is a great option if you’d prefer somewhere a little more relaxed.
If you’re planning to do several day trips, I’d also recommend checking where your tour picks up from before booking your accommodation. Some tours offer hotel pick-up, while others have designated meeting points.

Tips for Taking Day Trips from the Gold Coast
A little planning goes a long way when you’re heading out from the Gold Coast for the day. Some trips are incredibly easy, while others require a bit more organisation.
Do you need a car?
Not necessarily. Brisbane, Byron Bay and Kingscliff are all reasonably easy to visit without a car, while South Stradbroke Island just requires you to organise your boat transport.
For the Gold Coast Hinterland, though, having a car makes life much easier. Attractions are spread out and public transport options are limited. If you don’t drive, I’d look at an organised tour instead.
Travelling without a car?
Check exactly where your tour departs from before booking your accommodation. Some tours offer hotel pick-up, while others have a central meeting point.
For independent trips, check public transport times in advance and don’t assume there will be an easy bus connection once you arrive.
Check the weather
This is particularly important for the hinterland. Rain can make walking tracks slippery, while heavy rain can affect waterfalls, roads and access to some areas.
And if you’re heading to an island or planning a boat trip, always check the conditions before you go.
Wear proper shoes
Even if you’re only planning a “short walk”, rainforest tracks can be muddy, uneven and slippery after rain. Leave the fancy sandals in your hotel and bring shoes you can actually walk in.
Start early
Some of the most popular day trips get busy, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Leaving early also gives you more time to explore without feeling like you’re racing back to the Gold Coast.
Don’t rely on mobile reception
Reception can be patchy in parts of the hinterland. Download maps or directions before you leave, particularly if you’re driving yourself.
And if you’re doing a hike, check the track conditions and park alerts before setting off.
FAQs About Day Trips from the Gold Coast
What are the best day trips from the Gold Coast?
Some of the best day trips from the Gold Coast include Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook National Park, Lamington National Park, Byron Bay, Moreton Island and Brisbane.
If you want rainforest and waterfalls, head into the Gold Coast Hinterland. For beaches and a more relaxed day, Byron Bay or Kingscliff are great options. And if you’re after adventure, Moreton Island is hard to beat.
What is the best day trip from the Gold Coast without a car?
Brisbane is probably the easiest day trip from the Gold Coast without a car, thanks to the regular train service between the two cities.
Byron Bay and Kingscliff are also possible without driving. For places such as Springbrook, Tamborine Mountain and Lamington National Park, I’d recommend booking an organised tour instead. You’ll save yourself a lot of time trying to piece together public transport.
Can you do Byron Bay as a day trip from the Gold Coast?
Absolutely. Byron Bay is one of the easiest Gold Coast day trips and takes around 1–1.5 hours by car, depending on traffic and where you’re staying.
You can spend the day exploring the beaches, walking up to Cape Byron Lighthouse, browsing the shops and grabbing lunch at one of the many cafés and restaurants.
It’s also a good option if you don’t have a car, as you can book a transfer or tour from the Gold Coast.
What are the best Gold Coast Hinterland day trips?
The best Gold Coast Hinterland day trips include Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook National Park, Natural Bridge, Lamington National Park and Canungra Valley.
Each offers something a little different, from rainforest walks and waterfalls to wineries, food and wildlife.
Can you visit Springbrook National Park without a car?
It’s possible, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to explore the park by public transport. Attractions and walking tracks are spread out, and there isn’t a convenient public transport network connecting them.
If you don’t have a car, an organised Springbrook and Natural Bridge tour is a much easier option.
Is Moreton Island a good day trip from the Gold Coast?
Yes, but be prepared for a long day. Moreton Island is much closer to Brisbane, so getting there from the Gold Coast involves a longer journey and ferry transfer.
I’d recommend booking an organised tour from the Gold Coast rather than trying to organise all the transport yourself. Once you’re on the island, you can spend the day snorkelling, sandboarding, spotting dolphins or exploring the beaches.
What is the easiest day trip from the Gold Coast?
Brisbane is probably the easiest, particularly if you don’t have a car. The train takes you directly into the city, where you can explore South Bank, the Brisbane River, museums, galleries, shops and restaurants on foot or by public transport.
For an easy beach escape, Kingscliff is another good option.
How many days do you need on the Gold Coast?
I’d recommend spending at least 4–5 days on the Gold Coast if you want to explore the beaches and major attractions while fitting in a couple of day trips.
If you have a week or longer, you can slow things down and add several Gold Coast day trips without feeling like you’re constantly rushing from one place to another.
Ready to Explore Beyond the Gold Coast?
One of the things I love about living on the Gold Coast is that there’s so much more to explore once you get beyond the beaches. Within a few hours, you can be standing under a waterfall, wandering through rainforest, drinking wine in the hinterland or sitting on a beach somewhere in northern NSW.
And if you don’t have a car, don’t panic. I live on the Gold Coast without one, so I know firsthand that you can still get out and explore. Some places, like Brisbane, are easy enough to do independently. Others are honestly more effort than they’re worth without a car, and that’s where I’d recommend booking a tour and letting someone else deal with the driving.
Hopefully, this list has given you a few ideas for your next adventure — whether that’s a quick trip into the hinterland or a full day out having island adventures.
